Eindhoven foundry XIVER is adding an ASML PAS 5500 deep-ultraviolet lithography tool to expand production of microsystems and photonics. The tool is expected to become operational in 2027, according to IO+.
Why it mattersThe article says it can support double-sided wafer patterning and submicron 3D micromachining, for applications including optical communications, infrared sensing and ultrasonic transducers. That gives customers a route from photonics prototypes towards larger-scale production. It is a specific expansion in European chipmaking capacity, though not an AI product announcement. How useful the new capacity proves will depend on what XIVER can bring into production once the tool is running.
Discuss: Should Europe prioritise specialist photonics foundries like XIVER, or put more effort into expanding capacity for mainstream chips?
