LangChain says AI agents work better when their context is chosen carefully, rather than filled with oversized search results or stale data. Its advice includes using tools such as glob and grep to narrow searches, saving large results to files and delegating reading to subagents so the main agent gets the relevant conclusions.

Why it matters

For developers, the practical point is simple: context management starts before the model answers. More material is not automatically more useful; even an agent can benefit from not being handed the entire filing cabinet.

Discuss: When building agents, which matters more in practice: better retrieval, or larger context windows?
