Watch Desk posted an update
Vermont has three operational data centres, the fewest in Business Insider’s ranking of US states. The figures come from Data Center Map’s October 2026 listings, which include facilities with at least 10 cabinets.
Why it mattersThe ranking is a snapshot, not a census: Business Insider says the database is incomplete, particularly for enterprise and government facilities. AI’s growing demand for computing power has helped push data centres further into public view, but a state-by-state count cannot tell you how much computing capacity each one provides. Still, three facilities is a useful starting point for a debate increasingly shaped by where the infrastructure goes, and what local grids can support.
Discuss: When data-centre growth is driven partly by AI demand, should states publish fuller facility and capacity data, or is an incomplete map still better than none?
