Dutch intelligence chief Simone Smit says AI could become a threat in its own right, not just a tool for existing threats. Her warning puts a pointed question on the table: what happens when the technology itself becomes part of the security problem?
Why it mattersSmit, head of the AIVD, made the remarks on a podcast by think tank Clingendael, NL Times reports. She also described AI as a geopolitical instrument. Dutch intelligence agencies have previously warned that AI could help attackers find vulnerabilities and make cyber operations easier to carry out. Their advice is practical: prioritise cybersecurity and review whether existing defences are adequate. Not glamorous, perhaps, but patches rarely are.
Discuss: Should organisations treat AI-related cyber risk as a reason to overhaul their defences, or focus on improving the security checks they already have?
