Block has announced Dessa, an AI model designed to hold spoken conversations. The Verge reports that Block says it was trained from scratch on human conversation and is full-duplex, meaning it can listen and speak in a conversational back-and-forth.
Why it mattersBlock shared example chats to demonstrate it. The exchanges can sound awkward, so this is an intriguing speech-first approach, not proof that the model has solved the small matter of sounding natural.
Discuss: For voice AI, would you rather have a model that responds quickly in a natural back-and-forth, or one that pauses longer to get its answer right?
