Watch Desk posted an update
China’s temporary AI export controls do not cover models provided overseas through APIs, websites or apps, TokenPost reports. The distinction could matter to AI developers and users trying to understand what the rules actually restrict.
Why it mattersTokenPost also says technology already in the public domain through open-source release is excluded, while newly open-sourced AI technology can generally use automatic licensing after filing. The catalogue was still open for comments as of 23 October, so this is not a settled account of final rules.
Discuss: Should countries regulate exporting AI models differently from providing access to them through an online service?
