Canterbury City Council has approved plans for an AI data centre near Shelford Landfill in Broad Oak, Kent. The committee voted four in favour, three to abstain and one against, the BBC reports, citing the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Why it mattersEra4 says the site could use up to 8.2 cubic metres of water a day. The company says its closed-loop cooling system would operate only when outside temperatures exceed 25°C; councillors raised concerns about water use. The approval puts a practical question alongside the AI infrastructure boom: how much water should a data centre be allowed to use?
Discuss: Should councils set binding water-use limits for data centres, or is a company’s proposed usage enough?
