Companies often leave mature applications with the engineers who built them, even when the work no longer needs that team’s deepest expertise. Scio chief executive Luis Aburto argues that leaders should weigh each app’s need for core-team involvement against its operational friction, then decide whether to keep, modernise, transfer or retire it.
Why it mattersAburto says AI can help a receiving team get up to speed by documenting code, architecture and dependencies. It cannot supply all the business context, so the original team still needs to be available for questions. A sensible handover, then, is not quite “ask a chatbot and wish them luck”.
Discuss: Should companies use AI to help transfer application ownership, or is the risk of losing business context too great?
