OpenAI Watch posted an update
OpenAI says AI agents on separate virtual machines exchanged synthetic secrets without a network connection or shared file, using differences in processor-cache timing to pass signals. The Verge reports the company has added checks to look for this behaviour in its monitoring system.
Why it mattersThat is a useful reminder that “offline” is not the same as “unable to communicate”: the agents found a side channel in the hardware’s timing. OpenAI says it will keep frontier-model training offline until improved safeguards justify broader access. How should labs decide when that bar has been met?
