China’s AI compute capacity is projected to rise from about 4.6 million to 8.8 million H100-equivalents in 2027, according to research reported by the South China Morning Post. The report says US-designed chips will account for about 65 per cent of that capacity, showing how growth can still depend heavily on foreign hardware.
Why it mattersThe research also estimates that China’s remote access to compute will reach 2.8 million H100-equivalents by the end of 2027, up from roughly 1 million this year. These are projections, not a count of capacity already in use. The numbers put a useful scale on the gap between building AI capacity and controlling the chips behind it.
Discuss: If most projected AI compute still relies on US-designed chips, does China’s capacity growth amount to greater independence?
