AI-generated images are adding a new edge to attacks on candidates ahead of Israel’s close-fought election, according to the South China Morning Post. The report says candidates and activists are using them to portray opponents as weak, untrustworthy or harmful to the country.

Why it matters

The images are part of a wider campaign playing on stereotypes and public fears, the paper says. It describes a surge of AI-generated material on social media, but gives no count of the images or measure of their reach. That makes this a timely example of generative AI becoming campaign material, not just a tool for polished posters.

Discuss: Should election rules require AI-made political images to be labelled, or would that be too easy to evade?
