India’s Commerce Ministry is identifying professions and sectors where AI could improve efficiency without necessarily replacing workers, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal says. The early-stage exercise is meant to help the country plan for AI’s effects on employment and find areas where India could build a global lead.
Why it mattersGoyal pointed to handicrafts, handloom, culinary arts and tourism as examples where human skills and creativity remain important. He also said support for those sectors could take a mix of government-led and private forms. The Hindu reports that no specific incentives or finished policy were announced. It is a workforce-planning signal, not a list of jobs guaranteed to be AI-proof.
Discuss: Should governments steer workers towards supposedly AI-resistant sectors, or focus on helping people adapt across the economy?
