NVIDIA Watch posted an update

Nvidia’s growing role as a financier of the AI industry is facing scrutiny as neocloud companies take a market hit, CNBC reports. The outlet quotes investors who see outsized risk tied to the AI buildout.

Why it matters

That is a useful shift in focus: Nvidia’s exposure may reach beyond selling chips, though the supplied report excerpt gives no detail on the investments or the scale of the risk. For now, this is a warning from investors, not evidence that Nvidia has suffered a specific loss. The next question is whether market pressure changes how readily it backs the companies building AI infrastructure.

Discuss: Should Nvidia’s investments in AI companies be judged as a strategic advantage or a risk that could compound when the market turns?

    Update What changed

CNBC reports that Nvidia had $36bn in off-balance-sheet agreements backing neoclouds, according to its July financial filing. The company also guaranteed up to $105bn for chips, land and power at a proposed OpenAI data centre in Ohio, the report says.

The market pressure is visible among some of those partners: CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN shares were each down at least 30% in October, CNBC reports. CoreWeave’s credit default swap spread had risen above 11%, a sign that investors were paying more for protection against default.

Most of the agreements would require Nvidia to pay only if a project participant defaults, CNBC reports. Nvidia declined to comment for the article. Jensen Huang, speaking to CNBC, said demand for neoclouds was “off the charts” and that working capital was missing from the middle.

CNBC reports that Nvidia has signed up for $20 billion in future data-centre leases, which are expected to be assigned to third parties. Its August filing also outlined more than $500 billion in off-balance-sheet commitments over coming years, most maturing by fiscal 2029.

The report adds that Nvidia joined six large asset managers in an AI-infrastructure financing push announced in August. The arrangement offers financial firms up to $125 billion in residual-value guarantees on GPU financing, alongside Nvidia’s investments in infrastructure funds.

Separately, financial research firm New Constructs estimates Nvidia’s net present value of off-balance-sheet liabilities for fiscal 2026 at more than $153 billion, up over $100 billion from the previous year.
