Distributed SQLite has evolved from early open-source projects such as rqlite into a broader field that includes consensus-based systems, streaming recovery and merge-based CRDTs. A new retrospective on the ecosystem’s twelve years argues that rqlite remains a viable self-hosted option for replicated relational storage.
Why it mattersThe practical trade-off is familiar: managed cloud services have attracted much of the commercial investment, while self-hosting remains an option for people who want to run their own replicated database. Database choices, it turns out, still involve deciding who gets to mind the machinery.
Discuss: For replicated databases, would you choose a managed service for convenience or self-hosting for control?
