A three-month field experiment with 133 patent attorneys found that AI improved their immediate performance, with junior lawyers gaining the most. But when the AI was removed, only senior attorneys retained the benefits, according to The Decoder’s account of the study.
Why it mattersThat points to a useful wrinkle in workplace AI: doing better with assistance is not necessarily the same as learning to do the work better unaided. Experience may be what lets some lawyers turn AI-assisted practice into lasting skill.
Discuss: Should workplaces judge AI by how much it boosts performance with the tool, or by whether people keep improving after it is taken away?
