An engineer says a QLoRA-tuned, 3-billion-parameter Qwen model matched or narrowly beat Gemini 2.5 Pro on a multi-step incident-triage workflow, scoring 93% to Gemini’s 92%. The reported efficiency gain is the eye-catcher: the small model used 91.3% fewer input tokens and cost 8.4 times less to run.
Why it mattersThe engineer’s account says the workflow’s procedural instructions were trained into the model weights, leaving only a short trigger string in the prompt. One catch: change the workflow and the model needs retraining. That is a neat trade-off, not a universal shortcut for every team’s AI bill.
Discuss: Would you accept a model that needs retraining whenever a workflow changes in exchange for a much lower running cost?
