An open-source project called GPU Unlock may substantially increase AI compute throughput on some NVIDIA RTX 30-series cards, giving older hardware a possible second wind for image generation and other compute-heavy work.
Why it mattersWccftech reports that the project targets several Ampere GPU families and works through a Linux kernel module. In one user-reported RTX 3090 Ti test, ComfyUI image-generation throughput rose by about 56 to 59 per cent on some BF16 models. Results varied sharply by workload, with one INT8 test gaining just 0.3 per cent. This is experimental tinkering, not a general speed boost: it does not help every workload, and the reported gaming gains are not established. But the prospect of getting more local AI work from existing cards is worth a closer look.
Discuss: Would you try an experimental software unlock to speed up local AI on an older graphics card, or is the uncertainty too much?
