The UK plans to give its AI Security Institute an additional £120 million, alongside a £100 million AI biosecurity laboratory, BGNES reports, citing the BBC. The package also includes £200 million in AI-model credits from OpenAI and Anthropic for the lab.

Why it matters

BGNES says the measures are due to be announced as part of the Budget. That would put fresh public funding and industry support behind work on AI risks, though the report does not spell out the institute’s new funding plans or the lab’s remit. The money is the headline; what it enables will be the test.

Discuss: Should AI safety funding go first to specialist institutions such as the Security Institute, or to shared research and oversight across government?
