Hermes Agent and OpenClaw are both MIT-licensed open-source AI agents, but a comparison by model-access company OrcaRouter argues that their priorities diverge: Hermes foregrounds learning and memory, while OpenClaw stresses keeping state and credentials on users’ own hardware.
Why it mattersThe comparison also describes different operating models. Hermes offers several deployment backends; OpenClaw centres on a Gateway that can be configured for personal or team use. OrcaRouter says neither project publishes benchmarks that would settle which agent performs better. Useful distinctions, then, but not a scorecard, and the source has a commercial interest in model access.
Discuss: When choosing an AI agent, would you prioritise an assistant that builds a richer memory of you, or one that makes data custody the clearer promise?
