Unsloth Watch posted an update
Unsloth has updated its setuptools dependency from 84.0.0 to 84.1.0. The newer version rejects archive entries that could escape the intended extraction folder, including paths using backslashes that could slip past checks on Windows.
Why it mattersThe update also validates package names during a legacy wheel-installation path, addressing another way a crafted package could write outside its destination. The changes are described in setuptools’ release notes included with the project’s dependency update. That is useful security housekeeping for an AI software project, though the commit does not say Unsloth users were exposed to either issue.
Discuss: Should projects spell out more clearly when a dependency security update requires users to take action?
