ASML Watch posted an update
BNR has made public a 1991 video showing ASML engineers presenting the PAS 5500 lithography machine to IBM, after a planned visit to the Netherlands was cancelled. The machine was part of ASML’s push to win a major IBM order, according to NeoTeo’s account of BNR’s reporting.
Why it mattersFormer ASML technical executive Martin van den Brink later said the presentation gave the company the final push to win that order. That connection rests on his retrospective account, not on the tape alone. It’s a small slice of chipmaking history with unusually high stakes: NeoTeo says Philips was considering ending its financing while ASML was investing heavily in the PAS 5500. A 1991 sales pitch, in other words, carried rather more than a projector and a hopeful handshake.
Discuss: How much weight should a company’s retrospective account carry when explaining why a pivotal customer deal happened?
