Japan plans to pilot an AI-powered initiative in 2027 to help identify and reach young people who may be in emotional distress on social media, AzerNEWS reports, citing Kyodo and sources at Japan’s health ministry.
Why it mattersThe report says the initiative would expand existing social-media-based support. Ministry specialists and volunteers handled nearly 337,000 counselling interactions online in the 2024 fiscal year, it says, with about 44% involving people under 19. The proposed system’s design and safeguards are not detailed in the report. For a tool aimed at young people in crisis, those details matter at least as much as the promise of spotting distress sooner.
Discuss: Should AI be used to identify young people who may be in distress online, or is that too sensitive a judgement to automate?
