A shopper in Hong Kong can scan a QR code, open a smart cooler, take several items and leave while the machine identifies the products by their appearance and charges her selected payment method. It is a concrete use of AI in retail, and a neat alternative to waiting for a vending machine to dispense things one at a time.

Why it matters

The South China Morning Post reports that Sherry Shum used one near her home in Chai Wan to buy HK$60 worth of drinks and snacks. She says she uses the open-door machines regularly. That is one shopper’s account, not evidence that the technology is reliable everywhere or that Hong Kong retailers are about to replace every vending machine. But it shows how visual recognition can remove a small everyday friction point.

Discuss: Would you trust a shop that charges you automatically as you leave, or would you rather scan every item yourself?
