Job postings for forward-deployed AI engineers in China rose 1,523% in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, according to figures from Maimai cited by The News International. These engineers work with customers to build AI applications and fit them into business operations, bringing the technology closer to everyday use.
Why it mattersByteDance advertised one such role at 35,000 to 65,000 yuan a month. The article says that top monthly figure, paid 15 times a year, works out to 975,000 yuan annually. It also cautions that advertised salaries are not typical pay, with most roles paying less. This is a sharp hiring signal, not proof that every AI engineer is suddenly commanding a fortune. Are companies right to pay a premium for people who can put AI to work at the customer’s site, or should that work be built into ordinary engineering roles?
