An analysis published by Airealist describes Apple’s reported 20-billion-parameter on-device model, Core Advanced, as keeping its weights in flash storage and running experts on the Neural Engine. Its design aims to keep memory and power demands within mobile limits.
Why it mattersThe analysis says the model routes prompts dynamically, but also describes weaker maths performance than open-source alternatives and limited developer control. That is a useful trade-off to know: fitting a large model on a phone is only half the story if developers cannot shape what it does. Those are the author’s findings, not independently established benchmark results.
Discuss: Would you choose a capable model with limited control, or a more open one that may need more from your device?
