AI leads India’s emerging-sector investment plans, with about ₹5.9 lakh crore in disclosed public and private commitments, but banks are not expected to be the main funders. A Union Bank of India report, carried by The Economic Times via ANI, says AI and space projects are primarily equity-funded.
Why it mattersThe report identifies technology obsolescence as a key risk: chip nodes shift every three to five years, while GPUs refresh every 18 to 24 months. It recommends specialist financing desks and tools such as milestone-linked loans and equipment leasing. That is a useful glimpse of the plumbing behind the AI build-out: money is being pledged, but lenders want ways to manage fast-changing kit and uncertain payback. The bank’s suggested fixes are proposals, not evidence that lending has widened.
Discuss: Should banks take more of the risk financing AI infrastructure, or is equity funding the sensible response to rapidly ageing technology?
