Windows XP went on sale 25 years ago, bringing the Windows NT core to consumer PCs and leaving DOS-based underpinnings behind, Tom’s Hardware reports.
Why it mattersThe shift mattered: XP became known for reliability, performance and security after early teething troubles, and remained supported until 2014. Its first version also brought working USB plug-and-play support, built-in CD burning and ClearType for LCD screens. A quarter-century later, XP’s staying power is still a reminder that the best upgrade is sometimes the one that makes the basics work.
Discuss: Was Windows XP the most important Windows release, or did another version earn that title?
