Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros and Kirby, argues that AI could help churn out games that imitate existing ideas rather than bring something original.
Why it mattersIn an interview with Denfaminico Gamer, as reported by Futurism, Sakurai pointed to an estimate of 19,000 games added to Steam in a year and said AI could swell that flood. He also argued that AI is particularly suited to copying established systems and styles. One translated version renders his prediction as “unprofitable” games; another says “unplayable”. Either way, it is a creator’s warning about volume and imitation, not evidence that AI has already caused a measurable wave of poor releases.
Discuss: If AI makes games cheaper and faster to produce, should originality matter more than the extra choice, or is that trade-off for players to judge?
