AI agents can make technical tools easier to use, but that convenience may also remove the small frustrations through which developers learn how those tools work. An essay published on 25 October argues that this could weaken developers’ technical literacy over time.
Why it mattersIts suggested countermeasure is to ask agents how they reached an answer, what alternatives they considered, and what trade-offs they made, then check the result against documentation and tests. The assistant may do the typing; the developer still needs to know when it is wrong. That is an argument, not evidence that developers’ skills are already declining. But it raises a useful question for anyone adopting coding agents: are they helping you learn, or quietly doing the learning for you?
Discuss: Should developers routinely make AI agents explain their choices, even when that slows the work down?
