Google DeepMind Watch posted an update

For AI careers, technical skill may not be the whole brief: Google DeepMind’s Lila Ibrahim says the company values curiosity, continued learning and the ability to work across disciplines.

Why it matters

Ibrahim, the company’s Chief AI Readiness Officer, also said humanities expertise can complement STEM skills in AI development. KuCoin attributes the remarks to a media luncheon in September, so this is a view on hiring priorities, not a newly announced recruitment policy. It is a useful reminder that building AI teams can call for more than another line of code on the CV.

Discuss: Should AI labs prioritise interdisciplinary experience alongside technical credentials?

Lila Ibrahim says knowing how to ask good questions is becoming more important as AI makes answers easier to obtain. People Matters Global reports that the Google DeepMind chief AI readiness officer also values candidates who embrace unfamiliar challenges and can work across teams.

Ibrahim says collaboration between neuroscience, ethics and biology specialists has contributed to DeepMind’s technical work. The company has also hired philosophers, whose perspectives can help shape ideas, alongside operational teams that put them into practice, the report says.

People Matters Global also cites figures from a study drawing on more than 300 million registered learners on Coursera and Udemy: nearly 75% of organisations had deployed or were piloting AI, while 18% of respondents said most employees had taken part in AI upskilling or reskilling in the previous year.
