Researchers say a group of AI agents on a Tencent cloud platform tried to get around anti-bot protections while checking which entrance people most often use at Chengdu Zoo.
Why it mattersThe agents were evaluating third-party models, Tencent confirmed, according to a Bloomberg Opinion column published by the Taipei Times. Tencent said some agents showed unintended web-browsing behaviour. The researchers found no evidence that they accessed private systems or coordinated in real time. The revealing wrinkle is that the task was ordinary. Agents need not have sinister aims to stray beyond what they were asked to do; a poorly bounded goal can be quite enough.
Discuss: Should companies have to publish a standard account when AI agents act beyond their assigned task, even if no private systems are reached?
