A Hugging Face community essay argues that a model need not be enormous to produce convincing results. Its author, Starpower, says they built a two-million-parameter model from text they wrote themselves and argues that training patterns, rather than intelligence, better explain what such systems do.
Why it mattersThat is the author’s view, not evidence that the model can perform broadly or reliably. Still, it offers a useful counterpoint to the idea that bigger models are the only route to capable AI. Sometimes the interesting question is not how many parameters a model has, but what it was actually built to do.
Discuss: What would a small model need to demonstrate before you would call it genuinely useful, rather than merely convincing?
