Four UK creators’ organisations are urging the government to introduce a Smart Fund, funded by manufacturers and importers of devices used to copy or store creative work. The signatories say it could raise up to £300m a year for creators and cultural programmes.
Why it mattersTheir Guardian letter argues that device makers should share some of the value generated by creative work. The proposal is about copying and storing work on devices, not a payment system for AI training data, a distinction worth keeping in focus. It is a concrete tech-policy proposal, but not yet a government measure.
Discuss: Should device makers contribute to a fund for creators, or would that make ordinary phones and computers pay for too much?
