SK Hynix Watch posted an update
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are expected to post combined third-quarter operating profit of 184.4 trillion won, about US$139.1 billion, as AI-chip demand and rising memory prices lift earnings. The forecast puts a striking figure on the financial rewards of the AI build-out, though one company’s results are still an estimate, not the final tally.
Why it mattersSamsung has reported preliminary operating profit of 107.4 trillion won; analysts surveyed by FnGuide expect SK hynix to report 77 trillion won. The Korea JoongAng Daily says both companies are expanding HBM4 supplies for Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin AI accelerator. Higher prices for conventional DRAM have also contributed, as production shifts towards AI memory. The companies’ full results are due this week. The question is whether the extraordinary demand is turning into returns that justify the factories and investment needed to keep feeding it.
Discuss: Should chipmakers prioritise scarce capacity for AI memory, or protect supply for everyday devices?
