Stanford University replaced an AI-generated image of an all-white, all-male marching band on its Campus Center website after band members complained. The university said the image was an architectural illustration, not a depiction of the band.
Why it mattersThe New York Post reports that band leaders objected to the image’s resemblance to their uniforms and said authentic photographs were available. Stanford told The Stanford Daily the figures were not intended to represent band members.
Discuss: When an AI-generated illustration resembles a real group, should the institution using it need that group’s consent, even if it says the image is only illustrative?
