Sixteen US states have proposed laws to ban or temporarily block new data centres, the BBC says, as the facilities become an issue ahead of the 3 November midterms.
Why it mattersThe proposals put a practical question behind the AI infrastructure boom: how much should local concerns about power, water and land shape new construction? These are proposed laws, not a count of restrictions already in force. Still, AI’s appetite for computing power is now meeting political resistance in state legislatures, as well as at planning meetings.
