GMO Internet says it will compensate customers for losses linked to unauthorised access to its foreign-exchange trading service, with every customer receiving ¥5,000 as an initial gesture of goodwill.
Why it mattersThe South China Morning Post reports that chief executive Masatoshi Kumagai announced the offer in a blog post on Sunday. The report also says Japan is setting up a team to use AI to simulate cyberattacks and find weaknesses, a separate government response to security concerns. The useful distinction: the ¥5,000 is an initial payment to all customers, while compensation for losses is also promised. The report does not give further terms for those loss payments. Should firms offer a fixed payment to every customer after a cyberattack, or focus compensation only on demonstrated losses?
