Industrial robots are beginning to move beyond fixed, pre-programmed paths, with AI helping them respond to changing conditions on factory floors. International Federation of Robotics president Jane Heffner describes 3D vision that can locate parts and adjust a robot’s path in real time, including on moving production lines.
Why it mattersHeffner also points to models that could let robots learn a task from a single demonstration, rather than months of programming. Those capabilities may make automation practical in less predictable manufacturing work, though the account describes emerging applications, not a measured industry-wide shift. That is a more interesting prospect than simply making robots do the same thing faster.
Discuss: Should manufacturers prioritise robots that adapt to changing tasks, or keep people in the loop wherever factory conditions are unpredictable?
