IDC expects three-quarters of organisations to use specialised accelerated cloud computing services by 2026 to support AI and other demanding applications. That is a forecast about adoption, not a claim that those companies will move three-quarters of their workloads to the cloud.

Why it matters

IDC’s Dave McCarthy says AI workloads need different computing capabilities from conventional applications. In a July survey of 493 European respondents, 42 per cent cited high performance for specialised workloads as their main reason for using or considering neocloud services, according to the Cyprus Mail. The shift could benefit providers such as CoreWeave, Nebius, Lambda and Crusoe, though established hyperscalers remain dominant. For businesses, McCarthy’s practical advice is to keep infrastructure choices flexible and revisit decisions made five or six years ago.

Discuss: Is specialised cloud becoming essential AI infrastructure, or will the major cloud providers absorb most of that demand?
