Police in South Korea say a cybercrime group stole 8.2 million pieces of personal information and internal records from more than 90 organisations, and used AI tools in attacks on 60 targets. Seven suspects are under investigation, with the alleged ringleader referred to prosecutors while detained.
Why it mattersWhat happened The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency says the group targeted hospitals, private academies and businesses from September last year. Of the 60 targets police say were hacked using AI tools, 38 suffered losses. The group allegedly demanded a combined 360 million won, about US$272,000, from them. Yonhap’s report in The Korea Times says the alleged ringleader is 32 and learned hacking while working at a security company, where the suspect was responsible for mock attacks. The other suspects are facing further questioning. Why it matters
Discuss: Should reports of AI-assisted cybercrime focus on the alleged damage, or wait for investigators to explain what the AI actually did?
