A company kept an ageing server running after its internal fans failed by placing larger, non-standard fans over the exposed components, according to a reader’s account in The Register’s “Who, Me?” column.
Why it mattersThe improvised cooling worked, but the fans could fall over if anyone shook the server. When the third internal fan gave up, management finally bought a replacement machine. A resourceful fix, then, though perhaps not one to add to the official maintenance handbook.
Discuss: When replacement parts disappear, is a careful improvised repair a sensible way to buy time, or a risk that should force an immediate replacement?
