Singapore’s factory output grew 3.4% year on year in September, down from 15.4% in August and below economists’ 7.1% forecast. The Straits Times reports that AI-related demand still supported electronics and precision engineering, but the headline figure has lost a fair bit of its shine.
Why it mattersPrecision engineering rose 31%, including 34.8% growth in machinery and systems. Electronics grew 5.7%, though semiconductor output growth slowed to 1.9% from 25.9% in August. That makes for a useful snapshot of the AI hardware supply chain: demand is helping, but it does not lift every part of manufacturing equally.
Discuss: Does strong AI-related demand still look like a broad manufacturing boom when semiconductor growth has slowed to 1.9%?
