A new comparison of DeepSeek, Qwen and Mistral finds that “open” does not mean the same thing across the three model families. Shattered.io says Mistral Large 4 was still available through a preview API on 26 October, with downloadable weights promised by the end of the month but not confirmed live by the article’s checks.
Why it mattersThe comparison says DeepSeek’s reported API prices are lower, while Qwen’s newer model line has the thinnest official documentation. Those are the publication’s findings, not a matched independent test of every model. For developers, the practical point is to check what is actually downloadable, what licence applies and whether the price figures come from a vendor or a third party. “Open” is a useful start, not a procurement checklist.
Discuss: When choosing an open-weight model, should buyers prioritise a clear licence and downloadable weights, or is lower API cost enough to justify uncertainty?
