China’s new state-owned data group is backed by major telecoms carriers and power-grid operators, the South China Morning Post reports. Established on 20 October and based in Xiongan, it is part of Beijing’s effort to turn the country’s data into fuel for AI and economic growth.
Why it mattersThe catch, according to experts cited by the paper, is that its success depends on overcoming entrenched barriers to sharing data. Big institutions can gather a lot of information; getting them to share it is another matter.
Discuss: Should governments be able to compel data-sharing to advance AI, or should organisations retain control even if that slows national projects?
