Tesco is planning to migrate its store-edge virtualisation estate from VMware to Proxmox, according to a job advert described by The Register. The advert says the platform supports applications across Tesco stores and calls for a safe migration and validation of store configurations.
Why it mattersThat makes this more than a change of software preference: the systems underpin technology used across a retailer with more than 5,000 stores. Tesco has not yet set out the rollout’s extent, so the practical scale remains unclear. Even at the edge, infrastructure changes have a habit of reaching the till eventually.
Discuss: For systems spread across thousands of stores, is moving to an open-source VMware alternative worth the migration risk and operational effort?
