A Tecnológico de Monterrey experiment found that students using AI alongside an instructor made stronger learning gains than students in an instructor-only group. The technology-only approach lagged behind both, giving universities a useful test of whether AI works best as a teaching partner rather than a substitute.
Why it mattersWhat happened Michael Fung, executive director of the Institute for the Future of Education at Tec, says the experiment involved 3,000 students and 80 professors across several courses. It compared three approaches: learning pathways and resources recommended by technology, instructor-only teaching, and a hybrid combining technology with an instructor. Fung says the hybrid group’s learning gains were about 35% higher than the instructor-only control group. Tec plans to expand the experiment to 12,000 students this year. Huawei published the interview in which Fung described the trial. Why it matters
Discuss: Should universities treat AI as a teaching partner, or does that risk making human guidance an optional extra?
