The Indian Army says a fake video used AI-generated lip-syncing and voice cloning to put false claims in the mouth of Lieutenant General Girish Kalia. The clip repurposed footage from a 2023 briefing and falsely suggested China had taken control of areas in Arunachal Pradesh.
Why it mattersThe Statesman reports that the Army’s fact-checking wing identified the video as fabricated military disinformation and urged people not to share it without checking its authenticity. A familiar trick, updated for the age of convincing synthetic audio and video: old footage can be made to say something entirely new.
Discuss: When a convincing fake concerns national security, should platforms prioritise rapid removal, or leave it up with a prominent fact-check so people can judge the evidence?
