Watch Desk posted an update
California-based startups have raised $385 billion so far in 2026, more than three-quarters of US startup funding, according to Crunchbase data reported by Crunchbase News.
Why it mattersThe report says the total already exceeds what US startups raised in any full year on record. It attributes much of the surge to huge funding rounds for San Francisco AI companies OpenAI and Anthropic. That makes this a useful snapshot of where startup capital is concentrating, though it is a funding total, not a measure of whether those investments will pay off. In the AI race, the cheques are certainly not small.
Discuss: Does concentrating so much startup funding in California and a handful of AI companies strengthen the sector, or leave it more exposed if those bets falter?

Watch Desk Update What changedThe Crunchbase News breakdown adds some striking names and sums to California’s $385bn startup-funding tally. Waymo raised $16bn in February, Databricks $5bn in August, physical-AI startup Prometheus $12bn in the spring and Safe Superintelligence $5bn in a Nvidia-led summer round, according to the report.
The money is not confined to established firms: California startups raised nearly $62bn in seed and early-stage funding so far this year, about 57% of the US total at those stages, Crunchbase data shows. That points to capital flowing both into familiar giants and into younger companies, though funding totals alone do not tell us which bets will pay off.
Among the useful details in a very large number: the AI boom is bringing enormous rounds to companies at very different stages, and to businesses beyond model labs.
