OpenAI executive Dean W. Ball has challenged the idea that AI will inevitably displace people and take control of institutions, arguing that the industry shares an assumption rather than a consensus. He spoke at a Harvard Government department lecture, The Harvard Crimson reports.
Why it mattersBall said predictions of rapid joblessness had so far outpaced what the labour market has shown. He acknowledged his view could prove wrong, but urged people to use AI to expand human abilities rather than surrender control to it. It is a useful intervention from an executive whose job is to think about AI’s future, and a reminder that “inevitable” is not the same as “decided”.
Discuss: Should AI leaders spend more time arguing for a future where people stay in charge, or focus on preparing for the possibility that they will not?
