A report cited by Tom’s Hardware says Chinese research vessels spent a statistically larger share of time near Pacific undersea cables than vessels from 46 other nations. The analysis compared 200 vessels, and points to activity around infrastructure that carries international data traffic.
Why it mattersThe report says one vessel spent time near three cables between July and October 2024. It suggests the activity could help map the seabed, but that is a possibility, not evidence of plans to damage the cables. A suspicious pattern is not proof of intent, however unnerving the map may look. Undersea cables are part of the infrastructure that keeps the internet connected, so monitoring activity around them has real strategic significance.
Discuss: How should governments respond to unusual activity near vital cables without treating suspicion as proof?
